Combination and oily skin are among the most common skin conditions encountered in aesthetic clinics today.Yet, they remain some of the most misunderstood. For a long time, these conditions were reduced to a simple excess of sebum or the presence of blemishes; however, today, combination and oily skin are viewed as manifestations of a complex “sebaceous profile.” This profile is not static—it evolves throughout one’s life, influenced by genetics, hormones, lifestyle, environmental factors, and skincare habits.
When this profile falls out of balance, it triggers a range of skin concerns: excessive shine, enlarged pores, an uneven skin surface and texture, microcomedones, blackheads, inflammatory blemishes, and even acne at various stages of development. These manifestations can coexist and shift over time, reflecting a biological imbalance that extends far beyond mere excess sebum.
While often associated with adolescence, combination and oily skin frequently persist well beyond those years. Scientific data indicates that approximately one in four adults has oily skin, while nearly one in two has combination skin. For many adults, this sebaceous condition continues into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s—with acne being just one of several possible clinical manifestations.
